Great speakers, cover crop plots, soil health demonstrations, DEC credits, and BBQ lunch
Don’t forget to register for the upcoming Soil Health Field Day on July 13th from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM at the Rodman Lott & Son Farms in Seneca Falls. There will be great speakers, cover crop plots, soil health demonstrations, DEC and CCA credits, a raffle, and a delicious BBQ lunch. Event organizers decided to host this event again at the Rodman Lott & Son Farms due to the success of last year’s event.
“The collaboration and knowledge-sharing that will take place at this field day are invaluable for farmers, agricultural professionals, and researchers looking to enhance their understanding of innovative research and practical on-farm practices,” said Joseph Amsili, extension associate at the Cornell Soil Health Program.
Take advantage of this opportunity to enhance your knowledge and connect with like-minded individuals.
This year, we are excited to have presentations from Kathryn Bushley, Matt Ryan, Vipan Kumar, and Rodman Lott:
- Kathryn Bushley is a leading researcher studying how to control soybean cyst nematode, the nation’s number one soybean pest and an emerging pest in NY, using nematode-trapping fungi and other beneficial soil microorganisms that live on soybean roots. She will also discuss some research on the effect of crop rotation on soybean cyst nematode.
- Matt Ryan, co-PI for the New York Soil Health Initiative, will discuss his lab’s innovative research on using cover crops to facilitate no-till in organic systems. He will also discuss managing nitrogen with cover crops and the results of planting green termination date experiments in non-organic systems.
- Vipan Kumar, the new weed science faculty at Cornell for field crops, will discuss his past weed science research in Kansas and his innovative research interests to support NY field crop growers with their weed challenges.
- The last speaker of the morning will be Rodman Lott, the host farm’s owner and operator, who will share his experiences implementing cover crops and reduced tillage to improve soil health at the farm.
After the delicious BBQ lunch, we’ll head outside to learn about different cover crop species, equipment, and important soil processes that underpin healthy soil functioning at cover crop plots and the soil health trailer. Jason Cuddeback, a key co-organizer from the Cayuga Soil and Water Conservation District, is looking forward to these demos because, as he says, “If you see, smell, and feel what the soil provides, it will tell you what it needs.”
Early registrations and RSVPs will help us plan how much food to purchase, and you will be rewarded with a free copy of Managing Cover Crops Profitably.
Take advantage of this opportunity to network, learn, and empower yourself with the latest insights and practices in soil health.
This event is brought to you by Cayuga, Tompkins, and Seneca Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the New York Soil Health Initiative at Cornell, CCE South Central NY Dairy and Field Crops, Kings AgriSeeds, NRCS of Seneca County, and Rodman Lott & Son Farms.
