The New York Soil Health (NYSH) initiative has released an updated factsheet to guide individuals on soil lead screening following the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new guidelines issued in January 2024. These guidelines, although non-regulatory, significantly lower the recommended regional screening level (RSL) for soil lead in residential areas from 400 parts per million (ppm) to 200 ppm. Stricter thresholds of 100 ppm apply in areas with additional lead sources, particularly where children are at greater risk.
The factsheet provides:
- Guidance on soil testing methods: Compare testing options, including home kits, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and certified laboratory analysis, to determine the most suitable approach for your needs
- Instructions for interpreting test results: Understand soil lead levels and what they mean for your land use decisions and health precautions
- Steps for safe gardening practices: Recommendations for minimizing lead exposure, such as using raised beds with clean soil, balancing soil nutrients and pH, and protective measures for children and families
This resource is designed to help urban gardeners, homeowners, and community groups make informed decisions about land use and safety.
